"Relaxing Weekend"

So Dan and I had decided to have a relaxing weekend this weekend. We've been traveling TONS and are just about sick of being away from home. We both decided that it was time to just spend a weekend at home, doing nothing.

That was until......my husband got it in his head that we needed to rearrange the living room! We've been talking about doing this for some time, months even, but haven't had the time or desire to do much about it. I came up with the layout I would like, and Dan, after measuring EVERYTHING decided my idea would work and decided we should just do it.

So Saturday afternoon around 1:30pm we starting our rearranging. It wasn't just rearranging though, it was also major cleaning. Ajay was quite fond of going behind things like the entertainment center, which was impossible to clean really well because of all the wires, so we got to wipe down everything in our living room.

It was very satisfying when it was done and it looks great and we both really love the new layout, but it kind of blew our "relaxing weekend", which I was really looking forward too. Oh, well, maybe next weekend.

Ankle Update

In March I had ankle surgery. I had broken off a part of my bone and had a chronic fracture in it as well. I had also pull some tendons in my ankle, so my ankle specialist Dr. Lee had to perform an "ankle stabilization" surgery. Which included putting some screws in the bone of my ankle.

The incision looked really bad at first but it looks 100 times better now.

Today however I was able to get rid of my surgical boot in favor of a lighter weight brace. It hurts a lot to wear it but I can wear a normal shoe again, which is kind of nice. Hopefully, I'll start driving again soon. I haven't driven in almost four months so I have to admit I'm a little nervous about it.

Dan and Nikki's Wedding

This weekend Dan and I were up to Minnesota...yes again! I think it's the fourth time in just a couple months, we're pretty traveled out.

This weekend it was to see Dan's friend Dan get married to a woman he met while vacationing in England. Nikki and her 15 year-old daughter Phillipa moved to the states just about a month or so ago. We're really happy for all three of them, they are going to be a great family.

Nikki and Dan both looked great.

I tried to take some good pictures but not many of them turned out as great as I had hoped.

We got a few nice shots hopefully Nikki and Dan will like. Congrats to both of you!

Looking for a dog

Dan and I always knew that after we lost Ajay (although we didn't think it would be when he was so young) we would get a dog. We've begun discussing it because I want to make sure we really research the different breeds and know what dog would be right for us before bringing one into the family. We know we're going to wait until late summer or fall before adopting one, we still need time to grieve for Ajay and to do enough research to figure out which breed we want.

I'm not really a big small dog fan, although there are the exceptions to every rule. Some friends of our Linz and Steve have a Silky Terrier that is just the cutest little dog you've ever see! Pip has so much personality! I just know that they really like to be with their family and our dog will have to spend time alone when we're at home, so we have to have a dog that can be by itself for at least 8 hours without getting too unhappy.

We think we've narrowed our breed choices down to an American Eskimo (standard), Collie and a Lab. I know the Lab is a very popular breed, but it is a really great dog and I just can't count it out. The breed I really wanted my husband ruled out right away. No Husky for this family! He's been really picky too. We'll have to see how things progress, hopefully I can talk to some breeders to get a better picture as to which breed we should choose.

Grilling Trouble

My husband Dan and I decided that it would be nice to grill out for dinner. Not just because food always tastes better off the grill, but also because it was just too darn hot for cooking in doors. Well, we went out to get the grill warming up and noticed some crappy bird had been crapping all over our grill!
When went to open it to light the flame (something is wrong with the automatic start and we haven't been able to figure it out so we have to light it with a lighter) only to find exactly why there was bird poo all over our grill.......have you figured it out yet???

Yup, you guessed it......he was building a NEST in our grill!!!! What goofy dumb bird would try to build a nest in a grill. Dan says it makes sense, but I think it's just dumb.

Here's the little hole he kept sneaking in to.

In Memory of Ajay

I finally started a blog, and my first posting is in memory of our lovely cat Ajay. He grew sick over the last week, we think because he ate some of the cat food recently recalled by Menu Foods. His poor kidneys shut down and we had to put him to sleep. He was a great guy, the best cat I ever owned.....please feel free to read on for more details.
About a week and a half ago, he started to get sick, throwing up, and just seemed generally a little lethargic. We took him to our vet (Dr. Morrissey at the Altoona Vet Hospital in Altoona, IA) to have them take a look at him last Friday before we made our way up north to Minnesota to see some of our friends for a birthday party.

When we got back on Monday we found out his kidney values were through the roof. Our vet recommended we hospitalize him for a couple days and give him IV fluids to help flush the kidneys and thus bring his levels down. We also had an ultra-sound done to check his kidneys to make sure they didn't have any stones, crystals, etc.

He normally weighs between 11.7-12 pounds, a healthy weight for a cat his size. On Monday, he was down to 10.8 pounds. After his IV fluids we rechecked his kidney values, only to find that they went up, not down. A sure sign, along with the fact that he wouldn't eat, that he was fading away.

We brought him home on Wednesday night, hoping that being home would encourage him to eat and maybe get some strength back. Unfortunately he continued to not eat, and continued to get weaker. On Friday we took him back to the vet, after having him on some medication to help his kidneys, while the number was a little lower, it was still 7 times the number considered the "high end of normal". Also, on Friday he weighed only 9.9 pounds, he'd lost almost two pounds in just a little over a week. It was obvious to him and to our vet that the time had come to let him go. We were told there was really nothing else we could do, even if we had all the money in the world, there was really nothing that could save him.

On Saturday, Dan and I took Ajay to the vet so he could rest in peace, free of the pain and sickness that was slowly killing him. I can honestly say it was the hardest day I can remember for a very long time. I don't ever remember crying that hard or for that long. My husband was great, trying to comfort me even as he cried and morned for our son, only a little over five years old, not nearly enough time on this earth for a cat with so much life and personality. We will be missing him, mourning him, and expecting to see him waiting for us in the window when we get home for a long time. If we do find out after his autopsy that is was the Iams pet food (Menu Foods) that killed him, you can bet I'll sign up for the class action lawsuit faster than you can imagine. Maybe if these people loose enough money from the lawsuits of other pet owners like me who have lost, or come close to loosing there pets, maybe, just maybe, they will stop using overseas companies, like the one in China that caused this problem, to help process their pet foods.

Enough with the sad, I've cried through writing most of this post....I guess maybe I tried to start it sooner than I should have, but I wanted to get something out there, in memory of my little furry son. Please see some great pictures of him below....you'll see what I mean about him having so much personality.

Ajay LOVED boxes, any shape or size, he'd try to fit into them.

Ajay was a very trusting cat, not afraid of strangers. He'd go right up to you, sniff you for a while to make sure you were okay, then he'd either take off and go sleep (one of his favorite past-times) or flop on his back a little out of your reach and wait for you to pet, scratch or rub his tummy. My cat, almost like a dog, loved to have his tummy rubbed.

We found out shortly after my husband got his PlayStation2 as a wedding gift that Ajay thought it would be fun to play with it too....
He loved to sleep, anytime, anywhere, almost any position. But he especially like to sleep on Daddy's hands...

He liked the Christmas tree....and our laundry basket if he was able to get into the closet.

Daddy and I love you baby boy, and we miss you terribly.....we will never forget you.
